bug report: nasty inventory destruction bug

Every so often, a player's inventory will get totally hozed.
Completely vanish.....  Anyone got a clue why this might
happen?  It usually happens like this:  the server crashes,
the player re-enters to find his inventory missing.

This is really very devastating for a player.

I don't really know those sections of the code very well,
I'm hoping someone else will have insight into it, and
better yet, will fix it!
