Unique Items Problems

Hi,
	I have crossfire.0.91.2, on a Sparc10 running SunOS 4.1.3.  Crossfire is installed in /usr/local/games/crossfire, and the heirarchy is owned by games.  The crossfire executable is setuid to games.  I received no error messages when I compiled.  But...I have not been able to get unique items in our games.  The directory is there, mode 755 owned by games, but in the log file the following message appears:

Can't open unique items file /usr/local/games/crossfire/lib/unique-items/city@city.v00

where city@city.v00 is any of the maps.  The lock files are also not in that directory (when I check during a running game).  Can you offer any advice?
