Crossfire on PPP is too slow

Hey folks!

I've just gotten the 0.91.5 client (no patch) to run on my Linux box.
I used a PPP connection to the Berkeley server.  I found the
connection to be too sluggish to be useful.  I really couldn't "run
at" things, because my keyboard history combined with net lag would
put me in odd locations.

I'm curious if anyone's doing anything to make Crossfire usable over
serial links.  Also if anyone can comment on the triviality or extreme
difficulty of making the necessary changes.  I might be interested in
working on it, if it's not too demanding a job.
