I think the problem here is that crossfire has been compiled with
the ENABLE_CHECKSUMS and USE_CHECKSUMS options so that editing the
player file causes a mismatch in the checksums and therefore the players
cannot save again.
What is needed is a utility for server administrators that recalculates the
checksums for modified player files and puts the new values in the file.
This utility could then be used by the administrator any time that
they had modified the player files.
Warning: should not be available to the players though!
