Well, this only happens if you hurt your pet at least once, by either
bracing and hitting it by "accident" when the monster in front of you
dies, or when you cast a spell or a prayer that has an effect on the
pet.
Try with a new pet; you should find you will swap places with it.
Pacifying the pet doesn't seem to make it passable again. I've seen
some of my pets eventually return to passable state.
Oh, beware; never orate to a fellow player's pet. I did this by
accident once. The pet turns on the player. He died. Seemed
reasonable.
