 X has the ability to set clipmasks/transparant areas.  But as far
as I know, does not natively support translucent images (ie, a translucent
red over white results in pink).  From the sounds of it, png does support
that.

 Now granted, that is a minor feature, but perhaps one people will want
to take advantage of.
