addendum:
The gtk-client shows the actual 'count' on the top of the inventory
window/section. You can click there to edit the number.
Typing numbers without the accent beforehand automatically
does so. (If you didn't bind some spell to your number keys :)

The standard client lacks abovementoned gadget, but says
"count: xx" when you type numbers.
