Compressing xpm's...

How can I keep the xpm files compressed?  When I did, crossfire would not
read them.  (obviously, this also means I got crossfire to compile with
the XPM option!!! :)  Compressed (with gzip) maps seem to work with no
problems...  Anybody have a simple hack to fix this?

PS My server, sonja.math.virginia.edu, seems to be up and running (and
quite stable :)
