Yep. The mopst important rule, therefore, is: quit the character after
it has died a couple of times, give the equipment to the next
character and continue exploring. After a few characters one will get
the hang of it.

Keep trying. You can cast prayers even if your grace is too low, but
it will take quite a few tries. The first one or two levels will be
timeconsuming. After that you should have enough grace.
There is really no need for a street of gods, although it will make
things even easier. On multiuser servers you will always find an
altar of Jehova in the apartment house; on all servers an altar of
Jehova is very like to be found in the inn in Brest (it has quite a few
random altars, so one has to be _very_ unlucky to not find the right
one in one or two tries).
