CF: Beginning second experience categories when one is very advanced in level

I *think* I've noticed one thing about the experience system which
makes it difficult to take up a second class after being very advanced
in a first.

I *think* monster experience is awarded based on your overall level,
not on the level of experience in the category which would get the
experience.

The result *seems* to be that if you've a level 27 mage character,
you simply can't kill anything as a priest and get any priest experience
at all.

Is this the case, or am I deluded?
